Math Teachers’ Circle Network Named as Partner in 100Kin10, National Network to Grow STEM Teaching Force
Math Teachers’ Circle Network commits to advancing the goal of recruiting, preparing, and retaining 100,000 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers by 2021
NEW YORK, Feb. 17, 2016 — 100Kin10, a national network coordinating and accelerating efforts to bring 100,000 new excellent science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers into schools by 2021, announced today that the Math Teachers’ Circle Network has been accepted as a partner.

Our passion at the Math Teachers’ Circle Network is to build strong professional communities of mathematics teachers who challenge all of their students to become problem solvers. Being part of 100Kin10 is a tremendous opportunity for us to share ideas and learn from the experience of other organizations committed to excellent STEM education,” said Brianna Donaldson, Director of the Math Teachers’ Circle Network.
Math Teachers’ Circles (MTCs) bring teachers together with mathematicians in a professional environment for mathematical problem solving. The goals are to engage teachers in thinking deeply about mathematics and to build a community of mathematics professionals dedicated to improving education for all students. Research supported by the National Science Foundation indicates that Math Teachers’ Circle participation increases teachers’ knowledge of mathematics for teaching and can also serve as a springboard for greater engagement and leadership in the teaching profession.
The MTC Network helps start new MTCs across the U.S. and provides organizational resources to support their activities. As part of 100Kin10, the MTC Network has committed to reach 6,000 teachers and their 600,000 students by growing its national network from 80 to 300 Math Teachers’ Circles by 2020.
More and better-trained STEM teachers are essential to preparing America’s students to fully participate in our democracy and to understand and respond to complex national and global challenges. To compete in the global marketplace and provide opportunity to all young Americans, all students—not just those fortunate enough to attend certain schools—must have basic STEM skills and knowledge. The Math Teachers’ Circle Network is one of 49 new partners to join a network of now over 280 of the country’s top businesses, nonprofits, foundations and academic institutions to help achieve the goal of 100,000 excellent STEM teachers.
“It is critical there be cross-sector collaboration to prepare today’s students to be the leaders of tomorrow,” said 100Kin10 Executive Director Talia Milgrom-Elcott. “We are excited for the many ways the Math Teachers’ Circle Network will contribute to our shared mission of getting more and better STEM teachers into American classrooms.”
100Kin10 partners have access to exclusive research, learning, innovation, and funding opportunities, all designed to foster collaborative problem-solving and support partners in fulfilling their ambitious commitments towards 100Kin10’s shared goal.
Organizations are accepted as 100Kin10 partners following a rigorous vetting process conducted by a team of partner reviewers and a national selection panel of experts in education and STEM. Applicants are considered for partnership based on their organization strength and STEM and teaching expertise; clear, meaningful commitments toward the 100,000 STEM teacher goal; and interest in and capacity to build the 100Kin10 movement.
About the Math Teachers’ Circle Network
The Math Teachers’ Circle (MTC) Network is a project of the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM; www.aimath.org), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to advancing mathematics research and education through collaborative problem solving. One of eight National Science Foundation (NSF) mathematics institutes, AIM was founded in 1994 and is located in San Jose, CA.
Founded in 2006, the MTC Network provides centralized resources for the national community of MTCs, including training and mentoring for new MTCs, mathematical and planning materials, a video library of exemplary sessions, an online discussion group, and a semi-annual magazine. The Network’s activities have received support from the NSF as well as from the American Mathematical Society, the Educational Advancement Foundation, Math for America, the Mathematical Association of America, the National Security Agency, and private individuals.
